Tip #7: Charted Territory and Special Effects
USE CHARTS/GRAPHS TO COMMUNICATE INFORMATION AND BREAK UP CONTENT-HEAVY SLIDES.
Information in visual form can draw attention, highlight, and even help clarify. A strong data visualization with special effects should be interesting, logical, and easy to understand. Some that are less successful tend to confuse or distort information. Ensure that not only is it ‘pretty’ but mathematically accurate and of course, relevant.
KEEP DATA-DRIVEN GRAPHICS LARGE, CLEAN & CONCISE. REMOVE BORDERS & BACKGROUNDS WHEN POSSIBLE TO AVOID CLUTTER.
Achieve beautiful results by utilizing complementary colors, patterns, and iconography. If you can say it in 2 words, don’t use 5. Remove extraneous information, imagery, and graphics that may confuse. Double check info for accuracy and remember that while you use special effects, less is more in order to avoid noise.
YOU’RE NOT A MAGICIAN SO DON’T PULL OUT ALL THE TRICKS. STEER CLEAR OF ARROWS, SHADOWS, REFLECTIONS, OUTLINED TEXT, & SLIDE ANIMATIONS.
Displaying information is an art and takes practice. What you create must be interesting enough to maintain attention, but overly decorating can be detrimental and muddy the waters. If you decide to use a special effect, use it to highlight something important. Don’t use tricks unless they serve a real purpose.
