Tip #5: Picture Perfect

A PICTURE’S WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS. AVOID LOW-RES PHOTOS, WATERMARKED IMAGES & CLIP ART. INSTEAD, USE HIGH-RES IMAGERY.

When presenting ideas, let imagery do most of the heavy lifting. Photography will create a mood and set the stage for your audience to better visualize while making your key points more memorable. Always use quality, unwatermarked imagery and be cautious of trademarks and licensed photography.

IMAGES SHOULD BE LARGE ENOUGH FOR YOUR AUDIENCE TO SEE. WHEN RESIZING, ENSURE THAT YOU ‘LOCK THE ASPECT RATIO’ TO AVOID IMAGE DISTORTION.

Test your preso’ on a screen to access legibility from a distance. Hierarchy of information is extremely important so be sure to pay special attention to proportions and scale. When resizing design elements, avoid distortion and ’lock the aspect ratio’ by holding the shift key as you make adjustments.

IMAGES DON’T ALWAYS NEED TO BE SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR. FOR EXAMPLE; TRY CROPPING THEM INTO ORGANIC SHAPES, REMOVING BACKGROUNDS OR ‘BLEEDING’ THEM OFF ONE OR MORE OF THE SIDES.

Cropping and layering imagery can create a sense of depth and provide visual interest. Think outside the box (literally) and experiment with unique photo containers. Don’t forget, not all images must fit within the bounds of your slides. Get creative by cropping areas of less importance off your slide.
